Who owns GEO? How to build a team for AI search visibility

Who owns GEO and how to build a GEO team

Generative engine optimization touches technical SEO, content, brand messaging and PR at once. That makes it easy for everyone to care about it and nobody to own it. Here's how to assign ownership, which roles you need and when an agency makes sense.

Why GEO falls between teams

An AI answer about your category depends on several things at once: whether AI crawlers can access your site, whether your pages clearly answer the question, how your brand is described, and whether independent sources like review sites, Reddit and editorial articles mention you. Each of those normally lives with a different team.

Without one owner, the measurement sits in one tool, the fixes sit in three backlogs and nobody connects them. The fix is a single accountable owner with clear responsibilities for the contributing teams.

The candidates: SEO, content, brand or PR

Each team brings something real. The question is who is best placed to run the loop of measure, prioritize, fix and re-measure.

  • SEO: already owns crawlability, indexing, Search Console and prompt-like keyword research. The most common and usually the most natural owner.

  • Content: produces the pages that answer prompts. Strong contributor, but often measured on output rather than visibility.

  • Brand and product marketing: owns positioning and messaging, which shapes how engines describe you and whether sentiment is accurate.

  • PR and communications: earns the editorial coverage and third-party mentions that engines cite. Critical for the corroboration side of GEO.

A RACI-style ownership table

For most companies, SEO or a growth marketing lead is accountable for the overall program, with clear responsibilities spread across teams. Adjust names to your org chart.

Roles you need, by team size

You don't need new headcount to start. A small team can run GEO with one person spending part of their week on it. As the program grows, specialize.

  • Small team: one marketer owns tracking, a weekly review and a short list of fixes. Content and outreach happen as capacity allows.

  • Mid-size team: a dedicated GEO or SEO lead, a content writer or editor with a monthly GEO quota, and a named engineering contact for crawler and site fixes.

  • Larger team: a GEO lead plus analysts per market or product line, content and PR contributors with shared goals, and a regular review with brand and product marketing.

In-house vs agency

Keep measurement and prioritization in-house if you can. You know your buyers, your product and your competitors best, and the prompt set is strategic knowledge. Agencies are useful for execution capacity: content production, digital PR, outreach and technical audits.

If you do hire an agency, own the data. Make sure prompt tracking, citations and reports live in a tool you control, so switching partners doesn't reset your baseline.

How Get Nodded helps your GEO team

The usual way GEO fails is the one described above: measurement in one tool, fixes in three backlogs, and nobody connecting a page or a listing back to the prompt it was meant to move. A GEO platform fixes that by giving every role in the RACI table the same data, framed as work they can act on.

Get Nodded is built around that loop. The GEO lead measures in AI Visibility, and each contributing team gets its part of the work in a form it already understands: audit issues for engineering, article topics for content, cited sources for PR, threads for community. It also answers the agency question: keep the account and the tracking history in-house, and share read-only report links with partners.

ChallengeHow Get Nodded helps
The GEO lead has no single source of truthAI Visibility tracks your prompts across six engines with a visibility score per engine and share of voice against competitors over time
Engineering gets vague “fix our AI SEO” requestsThe AI readiness audit lists issues across 8 areas, each with fix instructions and a ready-to-paste prompt for a coding agent, and AI Crawler Analytics confirms crawlers return after the fix
Content writes without knowing which prompts matterAI Content picks article topics from prompts where you're missing, researches them with live Google Search and publishes to WordPress, Webflow, HubSpot and other CMSs
Brand and PMM can't see how engines describe youFull responses saved word for word plus a daily 0 to 100 sentiment score show exactly which claims need correcting
PR doesn't know which outlets engines trustClassified citations show the editorial and review sources each engine relies on, and Reddit & Backlinks shows competitors' top pages that AI cites
Community work is ad hocThe Reddit thread finder scores threads for fit and freshness, so whoever owns community has a short, current list
Leadership and agency partners need updatesShareable read-only report links open without a login, so nobody needs another account to follow progress

Your first 30 days with Get Nodded

Use the first month to stand the program up and hand each team its first piece of work.

  • Week 1: the GEO lead adds 25 to 50 prompts, tags them by product line and intent, adds competitors, connects Search Console and installs the crawler SDK. Confirm the RACI owners by name.

  • Week 2: run the AI readiness audit and hand engineering the critical issues with their coding-agent prompts. Check crawler analytics to confirm OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and PerplexityBot are reaching key pages.

  • Week 3: content picks two to four AI Content topics for prompts where you're missing, edits and publishes them. Brand and PMM review full responses and list the claims engines get wrong.

  • Week 4: PR takes the top cited editorial and review domains and the suggested directories as its outreach list, and the community owner picks a few Reddit threads to join. The GEO lead runs the first monthly review from a read-only report link.

Which plan fits

A small team with one person owning GEO should start on Basic ($99/mo): one brand, 50 prompts and five engines is plenty for a weekly review and a short fix list. Starter ($49/mo) works if you only need ChatGPT and AI Overviews to begin.

Once several teams contribute, Pro ($299/mo) gives you 100 prompts to split across product lines, all six engines and two checks a day. Larger teams running GEO across multiple brands or markets should choose Business ($699/mo, 5 brands, 150 prompts, 4 checks a day) and talk to us if they need more. Yearly billing is 10% off.

Frequently asked questions

Why use Get Nodded to run a GEO team?

Because GEO only works when measurement and fixes are connected across SEO, content, brand, PR and engineering. Get Nodded gives each of those teams its part of the work from the same prompt data, and read-only report links keep leadership and agencies in the loop.

Should GEO be a separate team from SEO?

Usually not at first. GEO builds on SEO foundations like crawlability and rankings, so most companies run it inside the SEO or growth team and add specialists later.

What skills does a GEO lead need?

Comfort with technical SEO basics, an analytical approach to noisy data, good writing judgment, and the ability to coordinate content, PR and engineering around shared goals.
