How to set GEO goals and KPIs for AI search visibility

Most teams start generative engine optimization without a clear definition of success, then struggle to explain progress to leadership. AI search needs its own scorecard, because rankings and clicks only tell part of the story. Here's how to pick GEO KPIs, set a baseline, choose targets and report on them.

Why SEO KPIs aren't enough

When a buyer asks ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews for a recommendation, the answer often resolves the question without a click. Your brand can win that moment, or lose it to a competitor, and Search Console won't show either outcome.

GEO KPIs measure what happens inside the answer: whether you're mentioned, how you compare with competitors, which sources the engine used and how it describes you. Pair them with a few site-side signals that show AI engines are reading and sending traffic to your pages.

The six GEO metrics worth tracking

You don't need dozens of metrics. These six cover presence, competition, sources, tone, access and outcomes.

MetricWhat it measuresWhy it matters
VisibilityShare of tracked prompts where your brand appears, per engineThe core “are we in the answer?” number
Share of voiceYour mentions relative to competitors across the same promptsShows whether you're gaining ground or just moving with the market
CitationsWhich of your pages, and which third-party pages, engines citeTells you which sources drive answers and where to earn coverage
SentimentHow favorably engines describe youBeing mentioned with caveats or outdated claims can hurt more than help
AI crawler hitsVisits from bots like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBotA leading indicator: engines can't cite pages they can't read
AI referral trafficSessions arriving from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and similarConnects visibility to visits, signups and pipeline

Set a baseline before you set a target

AI answers vary between runs, so a single check is noise. Track a fixed prompt set for at least two to four weeks before committing to a number. That gives you a stable average per engine and a sense of normal week-to-week movement.

  • Choose 25 to 100 prompts that mirror real buyer questions: category, problem, comparison and “alternatives to” prompts.

  • Tag prompts by funnel stage, product line or market so you can set goals per group, not just one blended score.

  • Record baseline visibility and share of voice per engine. ChatGPT and AI Overviews often behave differently, so a single average can hide problems.

  • Note the top cited domains for each prompt group. That list becomes your source-coverage goal.

Turn metrics into goals

Good GEO goals are tied to a prompt group and an engine, not to the whole program. “Raise visibility on comparison prompts in ChatGPT from our baseline” is actionable. “Improve AI visibility” isn't.

Set targets relative to your own baseline and your top competitor's share of voice rather than an industry benchmark. Nobody has reliable cross-industry norms yet, and your prompt set is unique to you.

  • Presence goal: appear in a set number more of your priority prompts by the end of the quarter.

  • Competitive goal: close the share-of-voice gap with the brand most often recommended instead of you.

  • Source goal: get mentioned on a defined list of cited review sites, directories or editorial pages.

  • Accuracy goal: fix specific wrong or outdated claims engines repeat about pricing, features or positioning.

  • Access goal: zero blocked AI crawlers and no critical issues in an AI readiness audit.

Pick a reporting cadence

Weekly is right for the working team: check visibility by engine, new citations and any sentiment drops. Monthly works for marketing leadership: share of voice trend, goal progress and the biggest wins and gaps. Quarterly is when you reset targets, retire prompts that no longer matter and add new ones for launches or new markets.

Keep the prompt set stable within a quarter. Changing prompts mid-period makes trends impossible to read.

How Get Nodded helps you set GEO goals

A GEO scorecard is only as credible as the data behind it. Running prompts by hand gives you one noisy sample per engine, no history and no competitor view, so baselines turn into guesses and targets can't be defended. Goals need the same prompt set run on a schedule across every engine your buyers use, stored over time, with the answer text and sources kept so you can explain why a number moved.

Get Nodded covers five of the six metrics in one place. AI Visibility measures visibility, share of voice, citations and sentiment; AI Crawler Analytics measures crawler hits and runs the AI readiness audit; Search Console data sits alongside for the click side. AI referral traffic still comes from your web analytics, but everything else in your scorecard comes from one tool instead of a monthly spreadsheet of exports.

ChallengeHow Get Nodded helps
Single manual checks are too noisy to set a baselineAI Visibility runs your fixed prompt set 1 to 4 times a day, depending on plan, and charts a visibility score per engine over time
Goals must be set per prompt group, not one blended numberTags group prompts by funnel stage, product line or market, so each group gets its own baseline and target
You don't know which competitor to benchmark againstShare of voice with competitor discovery shows which brands engines actually recommend on your prompts, including ones you weren't tracking
A source-coverage goal needs a concrete list of domainsCitations are classified as review sites, editorial, social, reference and more, so you can list the sources that drive answers in each prompt group
Accuracy goals need evidence of what engines sayFull responses are saved word for word, and a daily 0 to 100 sentiment score shows when the description of your brand changes
An access goal needs proof crawlers can read your pagesAI Crawler Analytics logs visits from 32 AI crawlers, and the AI readiness audit checks 8 areas with fix instructions for each issue
Leadership wants progress without another loginShareable read-only report links open without an account, so the monthly review is a link, not a slide deck

Your first 30 days with Get Nodded

The goal of the first month is a defensible baseline and a short list of written goals, not a big win.

  • Week 1: add 25 to 50 prompts across category, problem, comparison and “alternatives to” intents, tag them by funnel stage, add the competitors you know and review the ones competitor discovery suggests. Connect Search Console and install the crawler SDK.

  • Week 2: leave the prompt set alone so the baseline stays clean. Run the AI readiness audit and fix any blocked crawlers now, since access is a precondition rather than a result to measure.

  • Week 3: read full responses and citations for each tag. Record baseline visibility and share of voice per engine, the top cited domains per group and any wrong claims engines repeat.

  • Week 4: write three to five goals, each tied to a prompt group and an engine. Share a read-only report link with leadership as the baseline report and set your weekly and monthly review dates.

Which plan fits

Most teams setting formal GEO KPIs should start on Pro ($299/mo). 100 prompts leaves room for several tagged prompt groups, all six engines means no blind spot in a per-engine goal, and two checks a day smooths out run-to-run variation in your baseline. If your buyers mostly use ChatGPT and Google, Starter ($49/mo) or Basic ($99/mo, five engines) on 50 prompts is enough to build a first scorecard.

If you set goals for several brands, product lines or regions, Business ($699/mo) covers 5 brands, 150 prompts and 4 checks a day. Need more brands or prompts? Talk to us. Yearly billing is 10% off.

Frequently asked questions

Why use Get Nodded for GEO goals and KPIs?

GEO KPIs need scheduled, repeated measurement across several engines, which manual checks can't provide. Get Nodded tracks visibility, share of voice, citations and sentiment per engine over time, adds AI crawler data and Search Console alongside, and shares it through read-only report links.

What's the single most important GEO KPI?

Share of voice on your highest-intent prompts. Visibility alone can rise just because engines mention more brands; share of voice shows whether you're winning relative to competitors.

How do I measure AI referral traffic?

In your web analytics, filter sessions by referrer domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Some AI traffic arrives without a referrer, so treat the number as a floor, not a total.

How long should a GEO baseline period be?

Two to four weeks of daily tracking on a fixed prompt set is usually enough to smooth out run-to-run variation and see a stable starting point.
