# How to track your brand in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google's AI Overviews sit above the organic results on a large share of informational searches, and AI Mode turns search into a conversation. Neither shows up as its own report in Search Console, so most teams have no idea whether Google's AI mentions them.

## AI Overviews vs AI Mode

AI Overviews are the generated summaries that appear at the top of a normal results page, with linked sources. AI Mode is a separate, chat-style search experience that runs many related searches at once and writes a longer answer. Both draw on Google's index, so the pages Googlebot can crawl and rank are the pages they can cite.

## What Search Console does and doesn't tell you

Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are folded into your regular Search Console performance data. You can't filter for them, and you can't see whether the AI text mentioned your brand without linking to you. To measure AI visibility you need to run the queries and read the generated answers.

## What to measure

- Mentions: is your brand named in the AI Overview or AI Mode answer?
- Citations: is one of your pages among the linked sources?
- Organic rank: where you rank in the classic results below, and whether the AI cites pages that rank lower than yours.
- Competitors: who is named instead of you, and which of their pages are cited.

## How to track AI Overviews manually

You can start with a spreadsheet. The goal is to check the same queries the same way every time, so changes reflect Google and not your setup.

- Search in a private window while logged out, so personalization doesn't skew results.
- Keep location and device consistent. AI Overviews can differ between countries and between mobile and desktop.
- For each query, log the date, whether an AI Overview appeared, whether your brand was mentioned, which of your URLs were cited, and which competitors were named.
- Note your organic position too, so you can see when the AI cites pages that rank below yours.
- Repeat the same queries in AI Mode and log them separately, since the answers often differ.

## Which queries to track

Pick queries where an AI answer could change a buying decision, not just your highest-volume keywords. Good candidates are category questions (“best CRM for small agencies”), problem questions (“how to track brand mentions in AI search”), comparisons with named competitors, and questions about your own brand, such as pricing or alternatives. Twenty to fifty well-chosen queries usually tell you more than hundreds of generic ones.

## How often to check

AI Overviews change more often than classic rankings, and the same query can show an Overview one day and not the next. Weekly checks are a reasonable minimum for a handful of important queries. For anything you report on, daily checks across a larger prompt set give you trends rather than noise.

Manual tracking breaks down quickly. Twenty queries across AI Overviews and AI Mode, checked weekly, is already over a thousand rows a year, and it still misses day-to-day swings. That's the point where most teams move to a tool.

## How AI Mode is different

AI Mode is built for longer, multi-part questions and follow-ups. It splits a question into many related searches, often called query fan-out, and combines what it finds into one answer with more sources than a typical AI Overview. That means a page can be cited in AI Mode for a subtopic even if it doesn't rank for the main query.

For tracking, treat AI Mode as its own engine. Use conversational prompts rather than short keywords, and expect more variation between runs.

## Turn tracking into action

Tracking only pays off if it changes what you do. Group your queries by what the data shows, because each group needs a different fix:

- No AI Overview appears: focus on classic rankings for now, and recheck regularly, since Overviews come and go.
- An Overview appears but doesn't mention you: read the cited pages and note what they cover that your page doesn't.
- You rank well but aren't cited: make the answer easier to lift, with a direct one or two sentence answer under a clear heading.
- A competitor is named and you aren't: look at which third-party pages mention them, and work on getting onto those pages.
- You're mentioned with wrong details: fix the facts on your own pages first, then on review sites and directories that repeat them.

## How to improve your AI Overview presence

Rankings still matter, since AI Overviews mostly cite pages that already rank on the first pages of results. Beyond that, structure pages so a single section answers a single question, keep facts like pricing and specs up to date, and earn mentions on the third-party pages Google is already citing.

Note that blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt controls whether your content is used for Gemini model training; it doesn't remove you from AI Overviews, which are served from the regular Googlebot index.

## Tracking it with Get Nodded

Get Nodded checks your tracked prompts in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. For each prompt, the SEO rankings view shows the first page of Google, where you and each competitor rank, and whether the AI Overview above the results cites you.

## FAQ

### Does Search Console show AI Overview traffic separately?

No. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in your regular Search Console performance data, with no filter to separate them. To know whether the AI text mentions you, you have to check the answers themselves.

### Do AI Overviews appear for every search?

No. They show up mostly for informational and research-style queries and less often for navigational or simple transactional searches. Whether one appears for a given query can also change from day to day.

### Can I stop Google from using my content in AI Overviews?

Google's documented controls are the snippet directives, such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet, which limit how your content appears in AI Overviews as well as regular snippets. Blocking Google-Extended doesn't remove you from AI Overviews.

### How do I get cited in Google AI Overviews?

Rank well for the query and its related questions, answer each question clearly in its own section, and keep facts current. Mentions on the third-party pages Google already cites for your topic also help.

### Is tracking AI Mode different from tracking AI Overviews?

Yes. AI Mode answers longer, conversational questions and draws on many related searches, so it often cites different pages than the AI Overview for a similar query. Track it as a separate engine with its own prompts.
